Manchester United expect to sell a record 42,500 season tickets before a ball is kicked in August.

The club have already eclipsed last year's mark of 40,072 despite a 10 per cent average price rise.

On the day American tycoon Malcolm Glazer's 300p-per-share offer to United shareholders formally closes, supporters appear to be staying loyal to the team.

A club spokesman said on Monday: "We have already sold more season tickets than last year, which automatically puts us at a record level.

"The likelihood we will sell all 42,500 season tickets by the start of the season."

Meanwhile the fans' pressure group fighting Glazer's right to take over their club are threatening court action to 'make life difficult' for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner.

Shareholders United chief Nick Towle has conceded that Glazer now controls the club, but the supporters' group are determined to keep fighting while even the faintest hope remains.

Glazer's share offer expires at 3pm, and the businessman's camp are looking to have built up their holding by that time to such a level that they can take United private, removing it from the Stock Exchange.

According to Towle, they would require 97.2%, and Glazer is already widely reported to have broken through the 90% barrier.
