Kevin Phillips is the subject of interest from various top-flight clubs according to the player's agent.
The Saints striker looks set to leave St. Mary's following the club's relegation, and he has been linked with moves to both Celtic and Rangers in Scotland as well as his old club Sunderland who have recently been promoted. "Four or five clubs have come to us and said 'What is the situation?' This has been handled in the correct way," his agent Jon Smith told Sky Sports News. "We're waiting for Rupert (Lowe, Southampton chairman) to decide what he wants to do.I think there will probably be some movement with Kevin in the next two or three weeks." The former England international clearly feels he belongs in the top-flight but he has developed an affection for the south-coast club. "I think as far as Kevin is concerned he believes he is a Premiership player, but by the same token he loves Southampton. He wants to play in the Premier League and he feels he's got 15 to 20 goals in him most seasons." Saints boss Harry Redknapp admits that he cannot prevent Phillips and Niemi from leaving the club, but he will not let them leave cheaply. "It seems as though Kevin and Antti don't want to play in the First Division. If people want to go and you get the right money, what can you do?" said Redknapp. "But I will be looking for decent money." Meanwhile Southampton have denied making a bid for controversial midfielder Jody Morris. Lowe said on the club's website: "We have not made any move for Jody Morris." Lowe also insisted that Tottenham have not made an approach for sought-after striker Peter Crouch."There has been no contact from Tottenham at all," he added. |
