Well I beleive they should be aloud a place. I beleive every continent of the world should get atleast one automatic place. I know why they are doing it, to avoid teams like New Zeleand getting into the World Cup. But if that must happen then so be it.

Once again i must agree with you, if the like's of New Zealand, Samoa, Soloman Islands and Tahiti win a place then they should be allowed to contest at the highest level.

I know they wouldnt block Europe putting Faroe Islands or Wales in there. So why block New Zeland. it is disgusting. And I beleive these rules should be changed to suit all candidates.

Europe don't want to give up a precious spot, they alreadyhave too many, while south america, oceania don't have enough. What should happen is take away the playoff position from our zone (Concacaf) and let a side from Oceania have a shot, the 4th place team from concacaf would fair poorly at the world cup anyways so give another nation a chance. |

Only in West Germany 1974 Australia played the World Cup and New Zealand in Spain 1982. I think that oceanian team should get an automatic place for the WC. For teams like Australia it`s hard beacouse they must play againts the 5th of South America and team like Paraguay, Uruguay or Chile can beat Australia not hardly

I think they should! The cup shouldnt really be called the WORLD cup if not every country in the world gets a chance to qualify! Anyone agree?

So does anyone think that Oceania should still get an automatic place in the World Cup once Australia moves to the Asian conference?
Even tho im from New Zealand so should probably support this idea i would be very angry if i was a good European country who failed to qualify when a team like New Zealand or Solomon Islands did and got thrashed at the WC, which is what would happen. I think once Aussie leaves the group the team that plays the 5th place South American team is going to have very little hope of qualifying so 5th in SA will pretty much becone an automatic qualifying spot which is sad. |

i dont belive it
automatic place for oceania means automatic place for australia. fifa didnt give auto/place to champion. do you think fifa give auto/place to oceania? only including oceania to asia is possible. 4.5+0.5 = 5 automatic places. i think australia is able to quallify from asia. nzl too. |

But once Australia move to the Asia qualifying group that automatic qualifying place will probably go to someone like Solomon Islands, cos New Zealand lose to them quite often. (cos we are crap)
Now there were guys at my highschool who were there on soccer scholarships from the Solomon Islands, one played in my team. He was 14 and in the Solomon Islands full national team! Sure he was an amazing player but they would be the absolute whipping boys of the WC if they made it. |

Ahh i see Jono wasn't aware of the Aussies moving to the Asian qualifying, in that case it seems pretty pointless because your right New Zealand etc will get played off the park. Why are Australia moving surely that gives them less a chance of qualifying coming up against Japan and South Korea? |

Their official reason for requesting the move is that they will face better competition in all their qualifiers and so be a better team. Cos at the moment they whip everyone in oceania as a warmup to their match against the fifth placed team in SA.
I think that they also hace decided that they have a better chance of qualifying in Asia as they can compete in a group for the qualifying places and not have it rely on two games against someone from SA. |

First of all, in Australia we are hearing that the winners of Oceania may go into the Asian group qualifications. If not, they are definitely going to be playing a home and away qualififer against an Asian nation (I assume 4th or 5th best), rather than a South American nation.
As for whether Oceania should get an automatic spot - NO, absolutely not. I have two reasons for saying this. First, you need to prove you can compete at the World Cup level. The standard is woeful in Oceania, and it would turn the World Cup into a farce. Second, when FIFA announced that Oceania were going to get an automatic spot I felt no joy. Australia hadn't managed to qualify on the field since 1974, and all of a sudden FIFA were handing us a place (provided we beat New Zealand). Wrong, wrong, wrong. Then FIFA took away our direct qualification and once again we had to beat the 5th best South American nation. We did. The joy of that victory can never be imagined. After 32 years of not qualifying, to beat a former winner like Uruguay to qualify was.... impossible to explain. There was pandemonium in the stadium. The whole country went crazy. If we had been handed World Cup qualifiaction from a decision made by an official two years earlier it would have meant nothing for our football, and the football team would not have managed to win over the nation's heart. Also, the team gained great confidence from defeating Uruguay, and went to the World Cup knowing that they could do well. There are only 32 teams at the World Cup. The winners of Oceania need to show that they deserve to be one of them. If they playoff with Asia/South America and win, then a team like New Zealand will know that they have deserved it, and it will mean so much more to them than just beating the Soloman Islands. |
