Is Crime in UK getting out of control?

Crime in UK is up by %10 compared by this time last year
with a massive rise in violent offences, knife and gun attacks.
Robberies are also up as is the murder rate and also sex crime.
We also now have this massive problem with Moped robbers especially in London.

Police numbers are down to there lowest level since 1985
and cops are over stretched following the recent terrorist attacks and the tower block fire tragedy.

Is the government only to blame for this rise in crime
    due to the austerity cuts
or do we need to accept that we are now living in a violent society and nothing can be done?

I'd appreciate it if you posted the source for "crime is up by 10%" Hams. What does that mean? A man sitting at his computer embezzling money or watching dodgy porn may be committing a criminal offence.

Do you mean "do I feel less safe on the streets these days?" The answer has to no in that case. If anything the opposite is the case, it has been a good many years since I've had to fight off an attack on the streets (okay maybe age and geography has something to do with that). It is not something that keeps me awake at night tbh.

Here is a source for you Pickles

I certainly don't feel safe on the streets of London any more.

Youths now days have a general lack of respect for anyone in
authority and i think crime is out of control.

Plus there are hundreds of Jihadists over here who want to try and kill us all.

Immigration is definitely a factor here.

Thanks Hams. If you look at the graph in that link you'll see that prior to the last two years crime has been on a downward trend since 2003. I'd say we do need to address the rise in gun and knife crime though, that should be the priority.

As for feeling safe on the streets, can you say that about any city in the world? When you are out and about you need to keep your radar on, because you know cities have some ugly people living in them, who might want to attack you for whatever reason. I don't walk about in fear, Leeds, London, wherever, even when I'm watching Spurs away when the chances of being attacked are increased. I just keep my wits about me, so I'm not going to find myself vulnerable in the middle of nowhere.

You had a far greater chance of being killed by a terrorist back in the 70's and 80's. The Media do a good job of scaring the bejesus out of us all and keeping us in a state of fear. Fear, Austerity,Police cuts and Political upheaval are all bound to have a negative effect on crime but I suppose it depends of where you live. I have always felt safe up here in the Highlands yet I never felt safe while walking through the City Centre of Coventry and tried to make sure I had back up if it was late at night.

Indeed, who can forget those brave freedom fighters planting bombs in McDonalds restaurants and pubs?

rolling news makes crime more accessible and gives the perception of things being less safe. There is of course this disgusting acid epidemic sweeping the capital city but there has always been crime in London of various sorts.

I don't feel any more or less safe but am always on alert as there are a multitude of potential threats that could rear their heads at any given moment.

The police are generally not being used sensibly anyway. how many man hours are wasted by domestic trivialities, or dealing with the mentally unstable? perhaps more focus needs to be put on what they're actually tasked with and you might find a more efficient and cost effective service.

I was in Stratford today and saw a group of heavily armed Cops
patrolling the station so that was reassuring and i think all Police should carry guns.

I don't want us to become like America though where all citizens have right to bear arms.
